Automated Locking System For Overhead Compartments

I am a United Airlines flight attendant and after seeing many cases of aircraft evacuations that are slowed down because of passengers retrieving their luggage from the overhead compartments... has anyone ever thought about implementing an automatic locking mechanism that can be activated by the emergency lights in the case of an evacuation? On some aircrafts where the flight attendant has to activate the ELS it could also lock the overhead compartments. This would prevent passengers from retrieving their luggage which would save valuable time and possibly many lives.
