Belly Landing - Fail Safe

Boeing Product Improvement Idea

Submitted 4 years ago

Although front landing gear failure is rare but in recent times, a lot of aircraft have given both the passengers and onlookers quite a scare while trying to land without a nose landing gear.

The idea is to use a set of all-rubber, always-attached (not using any robotic or motorized mechanism) pair of smaller tires right under the front of the aircraft (underneath the cockpit) to give it that extra protection in case a landing gear fails.

This will minimize risks that arise from the plane's unprotected belly touching the ground, which can catch fire, disintegrate on impact, damage the runway and put lives at risk of both the passengers and ground staff.

The design I had in mind was of two wide tires, with a simple shock absorbing mechanism, much smaller in size compared to the actual landing gear that also releases an anti-fire liquid upon impact to further secure the landing.
