Sleeved Threaded Fastener-1

Boeing New Product Idea

Submitted 313 days ago

I have designed and prototyped a new and improved threaded, sleeved nut. This new design is an improvement on other sleeved and threaded fasteners. My original design was invented as a result of attaching brackets to racing kart seats. The use of this nut resulted in saving time (allows for one-handed tightening) and effort (especially in chasing dropped nuts) as compared to a standard nut-bolt fastening configuration. The key difference in the threaded, sleeved nut I designed is the left-hand threads on the sleeve. This keeps the nut from being driven out of place when the adjoining bolt is tightened. After installed, the nut essentially 'threads' the bracket and can be easily replaced when worn.

The new design of this threaded, sleeved nut can be used in any industry that uses brackets, including the aeronautical and aerospace industries. The patented design also allows for different head configurations that include a countersunk head version that is applicable to the aforementioned industries. I have prototyped 2 versions that were made from stainless steel and have used them successfully in my own shop. I'm working on additional prototypes at this time.

The US patent allows for multiple sizes and head designs. There are many applications for this fastener including use with soft materials (wood and plastic) and hard materials (metal and steel products). There are also many variations to the design. Some additional concepts in the design are teeth on the flat surfaces to lock the nut in place and nylon inserts or a metal lock version to lock the bolt in place, and a newer version of the design that would include flutes that make self-tapping much easier and quicker.
