I imagine, that the present "globe" view is abandonned in favour of a view, where the surface so to speak is turned inside out. In this way you get a much better and non distorted viev of certain large areas of the world (seen at a distance of approx. 7000 km). When you study the world map, you don´t "travel around" orbiting the earth (the present technique). Instead you "turn your eye in different directions" without moving your own convenient steady position in the centre (the improved technique).

Apart from this, there is no need to change anything. It shoukld of course still be possible to zoom in almost infinitely to get more detailed views anywhere you might like
