I run an coordination business, specializing in dog shows. Over the last 4 years, I've been privy to serious discussions about vehicles. People who participate in any activities with their dogs are serious about the comfort and safety of their dogs- far more than a "suburban soccer mom".
This group of people have specific requirements for their vehicles that often lead to post purchase alterations (such as completely removing 2nd/3rd row seating, installation of platforms to allow for additional storage, and tie down attachments to secure kennels), they've even created a Facebook page to offer suggestions to one another and showcase their alterations.
I think this is a serious market that car manufacturers are missing. The need for a flat cargo area, plug-ins in the cargo area, vents/cooling/heating in the cargo area, D hooks for kennel security, ability to easily arrange kennels (for traveling with a buddy and her dogs!), easy clean flooring/side walls are just a handful of the many selling points that would be valuable to this market.
