Volkswagen Product Improvement Idea

Submitted 3 years ago

Issued patent b) below tests for line and ground faults prior to starting.
The balance is series of inventions using a novel low cost isolated high bandwidth current sensor termed RM (ratio metric) described in a) below. RM cannot be used for inverter control due to nature of inverter output. But it can be used for fault diagnosis by measuring current when the frequency is within a prescribed range. Ground faults while running are measured using differential toroids. RM can also be used to provide current information to available technologies used to detect motor and drive train faults and to detect harmonics indicating IGBT switch failure.
When insulation contains voids or inclusion, dielectric stress can give rise to partial discharge as described in c) below. Detecting the high frequencies emitted during such plasma discharge can avoid catastrophic insulation failure in wiring, pc boards and solid insulation of EV systems
Much of this is contained in EV Provisional patent filing

I was a senior VP at Rockwell Automation and USA representative to the IEC for 26+ years covering factory automation and insulation coordination.
Patent Number(s):
a)14/037,922 b)15/231,998 c)16/503,579 d)16/503,574 e)16/003,056 plus d) Provisional patent filing for EVs and Inverters that has not been assigned a number
Detail:
Copies of all patent filings and Power Point presentation will be sent on request
Bottom line is that EV inverter/motor drive trains are becoming very compact whilst inverter voltages have risen to 800v.
Insulation will fail over time due to pollution, vibration and temperature.In 20 tears there will be millions of EVs in service many without comprehensive protective and diagnostic protection.
Ground faults are seldom instantaneous. They manifest slowly giving time to protect the EV and its user if protective systems are in place
