My idea is to have a room to house the shopping carts in with a garage door on each end to seal the room from the rest of the store and customers.
A drain would have to be installed in the floor of the room to carry away waste product. The room would be Plumbed for fluids which would connect to sprayers similar to a Touchless car wash that could wash the carts and spray disinfectant when finished. After the final spray, blowers turn on and help dry the carts making them ready for customer use.
When finished, the garage door on the customer side would be opened for customer access to the clean disinfected carts.
I think this would be a cost effective alternative to passing out wet wipes for cleaning shopping carts and would clean the entire shopping cart not just the handle. Along with reducing environmental waste, this method of sanitizing would reduce the risk for employee infection, which implements a much safer work environment.
