The technology is also called Capacitive Proximity & Touch Sensing iLED where the same single iLED can be used to output light AND act as a touch input sensor simultaneously.

Capacitive Proximity & Touch Sensing iLED - YouTube

In the video clip, the iLED's have been programmed to light up upon its touch sensing lead being activated. In application, the lighting element and the touch sensor in each iLED can be independent of each other. For example, the iLED light can be programmed such that its lighting up or not does not necessarily have to correspond directly to activation of its built-in touch sensing leads, while the touch sensing leads can also be used to activate/manipulate any other electronic function such as sound, motorized movement, signal generation, etc., apart from/in addition to the light.
Essentially just by using the iLED, any LED, LED array, matrix, or display can be transformed into an intelligent touch sensing LED interface that will work without separately adding/overlaying an expensively manufactured transparent touch panel . As the iLED is touch/proximity sensitive without requiring physical/mechanical pressing, it is ideally responsive to user input, while much less prone to wear and tear than mechanical switches or even other means of input/touch sensing.

At the same time, iLED has numerous possibilities for other applications apart from displays, such as replacing the mechanical input switch in keyboards, keypads and function switches.

Furthermore, many other electronic devices such as those featured in the iLED YouTube presentation all require LEDs as an indicator for the status of critical functions (such as an On/Off indicator for power buttons), where the LED indicator is usually physically separate from the mechanical switch/button. These electronic products can be enhanced by replacing all those physical key/switch/button + indicator light pairs/combinations with the iLED which provides both indicating light and input switch functions in one single integrated component.

In these examples, iLED provides a greater flexibility in improving the functional and aesthetic design of any electronic product so that the appeal and marketability of the product can be significantly enhanced. As you can imagine from the examples shown, iLED has vast possibilities for applications in a wide range of fields and industries including but not limited to mobile devices, automobiles, consumer electronics, white goods, electrical appliances, games consoles, robots, various domestic/business/industrial human-machine interfaces, medical devices, wearables, IoT devices, interactive retail displays and many more.

In particular, one of the video clips in the iLED YouTube presentation shows the iLED being operated behind a 5mm thick clear plastic panel placed in between the touch source and the iLED's. As you may notice, we've incorporated a motion/proximity sensing activation feature which would be a useful function for many consumer applications.

We believe the iLED has tremendous market potential and there are literally unlimited possible applications of the technology for various industries especially in this fast-growing IoT era where all IoT devices keenly require slick and cost-effective user interface to offer great user experiences to the users of the devices.
