Minimize Belly Landing Damages During Landing Gear Malfunction

Boeing Product Improvement Idea

Submitted 6 years ago

When an aircraft is unable to touch down with its landing gear fully extended it must perform a gear-up or belly landing. Such a landing does carry a risk, as it is likely to cause damage to the aircraft or it could conceivably catch fire. Bad weather or high winds can increase the danger further.

Aircraft can be additionally equipped with some special foam spray mechanism and during such landing emergency, aircraft belly can be sprayed with a thick foam balloon/wall that would provide aircraft with some cushioning while performing belly landing. Long hovercraft type balloon encircled around aircraft, filled with thick foam material that dried-up inside balloon immediately after the spray. This foam needs to be created with such a material that get stick to walls of aircraft and hardened fast in climatic condition that aircraft outer body experiences.

Such foam cushioning may help in reducing friction spark hazards, deceleration forces, reduction in fuel spill fire hazard, aircraft damage and above all help in saving life.
