A Cvt Automotive Gearbox

Subaru New Product Idea

Submitted 5 years ago

1. The overall size of the gearbox core I have designed is 310mm X 180mm X 170mm.
which is considerably smaller than others.
2. CVT manufacturers have been trying to get a much larger ratio range than currently but have only succeeded in obtaining a ratio of 7.3 to 1, which is far from satisfactory.
3. The ratio range of this design is 12.7 to 1, and with slight modifications can be extended to at least 20 to 1 with very little increase in overall size.
4. The movement of the synchromesh assembly is extremely small, resulting in accurate control and also a very low wear and friction factor, important from a manufacturing point of view.
5. The movement between the ratio change disc and the main and synchromesh dscs is only 60 deg. rotation and is also only intermittent as the ratio is changed.
6. The main feature is that the system is a positive drive one. The drive sprockets are
always in constant mesh with the chain except for the areas where the sprockets are disengaged from the chain as rotation takes place. During disengagement the sprockets are kept in synchromesh rotation when they re-engage with the chain.
7. The electric motor that drives the ratio control assembly can be coupled to a computer controlled system whereby the gear ratio is adjusted constantly so as to keep the engine at maximum torque per revolutions at all times.
8. The design is basically very simple and will not require specialist machining or equipment to make. This is an important factor for the economics of production.
9. Because it is a direct drive system, it can cope with large power inputs.
10. The change in ratio is very quick, depending upon what speed electric motor is used, so the correct ratio for torque is instantly obtained with no "hunting".
11. It can be used very effectively for engine braking
12. It will also cope well with traction control.
13. It is estimated that the friction will be minimal, to be proved by making and testing a prototype.
