Bring Back 64DD

Nintendo Marketing Idea Idea

Submitted 3 years ago

Imagine having to buy ten controller adapters in order to get the benefits of 1 64DD?And if you have a PlayStation you have to endlessly search for controller adapters
the 64DD games are the second most underrated games aside from Mother/Earthbound I have seen newer games that are worse than this

Why it is Underrated?

It wasn't particularly expensive

64DD disks were much faster, more flexible and durable than CD-ROMs, and they also have copy protection.

The disks were difficult to break, unlike the fragile ones from the older Famicom Disk System.

The N64 Controller was the basis for Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Switch controller layout

it was suppose to be one of the first video games to feature online

what is wrong with PlayStation ?

1.Like other consoles in the PlayStation family of consoles, some multi-platform games run worse on PlayStation 1 due to its strange infrastructure. Namely more demanding 2D games, and/or 3D games.

2.The PlayStation controller's D-Pad is uncomfortable and can cause sore thumbs after using it for a while. This is made worse with games that predate analog control and must be played entirely with the D-Pad and controllers that have no analog sticks in the first place.

3.false advertising.for example The dials featured on the cover of gran turismo 2 are from the McLaren F1, but the F1 doesn't appear in the game, and McLaren will not appear in the franchise until 11 years later! Oddly enough, the McLaren F1 GTR race car appeared in Gran Turismo 4 albeit being listed as a BMW car.Double Life says that the PlayStation 1's graphics are lifelike when in reality they are worse than the Nintendo 64

4.There are only two controller ports on PlayStation despite many games supporting four players. You need the MultiTap accessory to be able to plug fou r controllers in.

5.The PlayStation 1 Controller does not look like a traditional controller.Looks more like a third party pirated controller and is as hard to read as Chinese letters

6.The PlayStation 2 is the only console from its generation that required a multitap to allow more than two people playing at once, even the Dreamcast didn't need a multitap.

7.Sony started some of the most toxic gaming trends like CDs the FPS and Loot Boxes. Many conservative organazations hate Sony more than any other video game company

why 64DD is underrated?

Yes, the name sounds like a bra size. But if you gave this console a chance, you would've realized it was good.

This was marketed as an expansion pack to the Nintendo 64; a way of competing against the PlayStation with its 'disk drive', so it could prolong the life of the console, while also making it cheaper for developers to bring out more games to it, as the N64 cartridges were not cheap to develop for.

It was a device that slotted to the N64, with disks being able to be used instead of a cartridge for a game, but there were some titles where both were required.

After years of it being hinted at in interviews, ever since the launch of the N64 in 1996, it was released in Japan on the 1st December 1999, and its timing couldn't have been worse.

The Sega Dreamcast had been released earlier in the year, and the PlayStation 2 only three months away from release.

64DD disks were much faster, more flexible and durable than CD-ROMs, and they also have copy protection.

Why You Can't See 4K

Most humans can see only a very minor improvement in picture quality between 1080 and 4K screens. This is because a 4K screen has about 8.3 million pixels but the human eye has only about 6 million "cones" which see color. Of those 6 million cones, there are blind spots and focus area's which further diminish the effective input of the human eye.

.There are only two controller ports on PlayStation despite many games supporting four players. You need the MultiTap accessory to be able to plug four controllers in.

What really counts is the number of times per second that the screen displays a new image, aka Frame Rate. Humans see continuously and not in "frames" but somewhere beyond 100 refreshes per second, we just can't perceive the difference.

when you have better graphics you are sacrificing frame rate.Sacrificing frame rate for graphics is not worth it.

Why You Can't See 4K, Why 8K Is Nearly Pointless & Why Refresh Rate Is All That counts.

In the world of 2019, 4K screens (which also have HDR and other image enhancing technologies) cost only slightly more than 1080P (aka. 2K) screens so that is what most people should buy but don't expect too much from it unless you are:

sitting a few inches in front of it (like in a boardroom), or,
the screen is massive

Why You Can't See 4K

Most humans can see only a very minor improvement in picture quality between 1080 and 4K screens. This is because a 4K screen has about 8.3 million pixels but the human eye has only about 6 million "cones" which see color. Of those 6 million cones, there are blind spots and focus area's which further diminish the effective input of the human eye. (See the video at the bottom of this post)

In the most straight forward terms you need to be looking at an extremely large screen for the human eye to detect a difference between a 1080P. For example, each pixel on a 60″ 4K screen is .3 milometers (.01 inches) wide. On a 60″ 1080 (2K) screen, which was the norm in 2018, each pixel is 1.2 mm (.04″) wide and the human eye just can't see much of a difference.

To see such tiny pixels, the screen has to be massive or you have to be just a few inches from the screen. If you are trying to watch TV, you should be sitting back 5′ to 10′ from the screen so the only place that a ultra high resolution screen has value is in a corporate setting. Think about a boardroom that is used to display very high resolution graphics, like seismic data, which people want to get very close to for a few minutes.

Why 8K is Nearly Pointless

If you have a 100″ screen, the average human eye would definitely perceive the difference. However most consumers have topped out at 55″-ish screens and that is expected to continue.

As you can see in the graph below, 8K screens exist today but even by 2025 they will have only very limited adoption.

2k-4k-8k-1080-screen-sales-2014-2025
Why Refresh Rate Is All That Counts

It's not that size and resolution don't count; it is that the vast majority of TV's sold in North America are 40′ to 60′ and have little price deltas between the 1080 (2K) and 4K models. So 50″-ish, 4K screens are the sweet spot for price / performance.

What really counts is the number of times per second that the screen displays a new image, aka Frame Rate. Humans see continuously and not in "frames" but somewhere beyond 100 refreshes per second, we just can't perceive the difference.

Below 100 fast moving images, like a car chase or a hand movement may seem choppy or blurred. This is because most movies are shot at just 30 frames per second and that just is not enough for fast moving content. Nearly all TV screens sold in 2019 can operate at 60 frames per second and many can operate at 120 FPS.

So to sum it up, you are likely to buy a 4K screen that is not much better than your old 2K (1080P) screen, but the frame rate is something that will really make a difference to you.

To understand all this in a much more fun way than reading this page, take a look at this awesome video demonstrates that 4K / 8K generally does not improve general TV content but the frame rate really matters.A 64DD has a higher Refresh rate than a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Older Consoles have higher refresh rates than many Modern day Consoles those high quality graphics are just not worth it.A PlayStation 4 or Xbox One has 1 frame per second a 64DD has 1,000,000 to 9,000,000 frames per second. You see refresh rate is the amount of frames per second. When you enhance the graphics this even applies to anti-aliasing you lose refresh rate which is frames per second
