The whatsapp allow to change the color of background of a status (pencil icon). When a person wants to change a color by clicking the color icon again and again and in case if that particular color will be missed then the person has to click again and again till that color reached again
So I think there should be a color palatte opened on clicking color icon which allows person to select any color he want in the background.
